i use xen (http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/Research/SRG/netos/xen/), which has always been free, for work, but vmware allows you to use windows too, which is kinda neat for the home user.
what is vmware? it's a program that you install on your computer, that allows you to setup multiple "virutal machines". so basically you have mutiple virtual computers running on the same hardware, at the same time.
for the home user, it's cool for things like running linux and windows on the same machine simultaneously, with different IPs, or just wanting to try out a new operating system without having to partition a drive, or dual boot. install the OS, you don't like it? delete the virtual machine and try something else. obviously it's primary use it for server farms where you have 1 machine running multiple servers, but it's a neat toy now that it's free for the average person to play with.
