This Fight Owns
May 14, 2009 - 11:22 PM - by Ekera
Seriously. Yogg-Saron is right up there with Mimiron as the ultimate "personal responsibility" fight. There are a lot of things to remember, specific places you have to be, dumb shit you can't get caught doing, and it's very easy to wipe if people screw that up. So, in that, YS is a fairly strenuous test of THE WHOLE RAID and their ability to coordinate and to perform on an individual level.

Fuck, blah blah blah, this fight is hard, but we won. It's really well-designed, the music is awesome, the effects are awesome, everything is awesome. WE'RE AWESOME.

On the other hand, true to KKW form, when we went and did VoA to finish off the night we managed to (mostly) wipe on trash.

Final boss loot -

Conqueror's Nightsong Spaulders - Ehala
Conqueror's Terrorblade Pauldrons - Romeo
Blood of the Old God - Loktera
Cowl of Dark Whispers - Malvagio
Fragment of Val'anyr - Choram (plenty to go)

Now comes the farming, and the eventual hard modes. Maybe some videos too. We'll see!

Hello Yoggy

Well, General Vezax didn't hold us up for long. After like an hour and change last week we one-shotted him tonight. The hard mode is going to be a huge fuckfest, but that's the future. Right now, this is a pretty easy fight.

Loot Pinata -

Boots of the Underdweller - Stryn
Idol of the Corruptor - Skona
Boots of the Forgotten Depths - Notaryn

Yogg-Saron awaits, and boy is he a pain in the ass so far.

Chaos

As the previous three posts might lead you to believe, Ulduar is difficult, but not impossible. The fights so far have been tricky, complex, and at times frustrating, but they are very much doable with a good raid group and good coordination.

Without a doubt, Mimiron is the hardest fight before Yogg Saron, at least on regular mode. Even though we got some time on General Vezax, he's pretty easy to deal with in comparison. Mimiron, on the other hand, will weed out the people who can't pay enough attention very quickly, and on top of that there are still a few mechanics in the fight (Rocket Strike on the tank in Phase 4 comes to mind [Krunch edit: You mean how the tank moves to dodge Laser barrage and somehow ends up in front of the boss even though he's clearly behind it.]) that are really clunky to deal with.

In the end though, despite losing 3/4 of the raid, we "killed" the smug little fucker. To do it on the first night of work on him was pretty hot.

Loot -

Conqueror's Gloves of Sanctification - Choram
Conqueror's Handwraps of Sanctification - Confessor
Pandora's Plea - Ehala

Very solid night, including some damn good progress on General Vezax. Sadly, we ran out of raid week, but next week should be pretty killer.

Adds... EVERYWHERE

Generally, everybody measures raid nights in hours spent doing shit. Sometimes you can also quantify it by bosses killed or loot gotten. Me, I measure raids in Excedrin Points, which I just made up right as I typed this. Tonight was worth four of those, including the two I'm going to go take right now.

Anyway! So, on the plus side, we started strong and finished strong tonight, but in between we spent a lot of time wiping to shit we shouldn't have spent a lot of time wiping to. It happens sooner or later; you do what you can, and eventually bounce back from it. Luckily tonight we did.

Ok, that's all pretty generic sounding. What did we actually do? Well, first, we saved our old pal Thorim. This fight is really enjoyable because of the chaos and the amount of adds involved, plus it's cool that they finally figured out a way to split the raid and have the fight work. Man, can it go wrong fast though. He held us up for a good while between figuring that split out, and just generaly dumbfuckery, but eventually he gave up and hi-fived us.

Loot -

Vulmir, the Northern Tempest - Eradris
Conqueror's Circlet of Sanctification - Tephea
Conqueror's Kirin Tor Hood - Gli

Next, the beginning of some of the worst trash clears inside this place. Packs everywhere, a boss that patrols, and 3 minibosses that apparently do "things" to "THE WHOLE RAID." At least you get 4 Emblems for your trouble, though. That led to Freya, who summons... TONS OF ADDS. That's starting to become a familiar theme here. We adapted a lot better to Freya than we did to Thorim, though, so she didn't hold us up for more than two pulls.

Loot backwards is tool -

Gauntlets of Ruthles Reprisal - Ghoulish
Conqueror's Scourgestalker Legguards - Loktera
Conqueror's Terrorblade Legplates - Lethargy

Next up is Mimiron. Judging by the 10-man version of him, Sunday is going to be worth two Percocet Points. Stay tuned!

Balls Out
Apr 22, 2009 - 12:28 AM - by Ekera
Moving right along! Going back in this week, we decided to snag the bosses we'd skipped last week because a lot of them were retuned. That's a delicate way of saying they were nerfed, but I like to STAY POSITIVE. No, seriously. Stop laughing. Besides, killing new bosses is always fun, and we'll have enough of killing the same bosses to last us the next 6 months soon enough.

First up, Razorscale. Shitloads of adds, and a DPS burn. The couple minor changes they made seemed to make this fight feel pretty good right where it is. Like most of the early stuff in Ulduar, tricky but not super difficult. Plus, NO TRASH. Gotta love no trash.

Holy shit loot -

Remorse - Romeo
Dragonslayer's Brace - Rokni
Living Flame - Malvagio

Next up we decided to go across the hall and knock out Ignis. He got "retuned" pretty hard today with a health decrease and some damage decreases to some of his abilities, so he really didn't take much time at all. Feels better now as an early instance fight. Still can be unforgiving if your healers lose track of Flame Jet timers.

^ Spot the stand-in.

More fucking loot -

Cindershard Ring - Zwingley
Pyrelight Circle - Thaine
Soot-Covered Mantle - Divisive

After punching out XT-002 again, we scooted right past Kologarn to go pay a visit to the Iron Council. Stormcaller last is a fairly easy setup as long as you aren't dumb with interrupts, so it only took a couple of attempts. Again, fairly chaotic fight that can be unforgiving of mistakes, but not that difficult to learn.

WHAT GOES HERE? -

Rune Edge - Stryn
Runeshaper's Gloves - Luxferre
Iron-Studded Mantle - Loktera

HOKAY. That's 8 bosses down out of 13, so we're well on our way. Could we see Yogg-Saron on Thursday? Hope so!
